Chickens Culled to Test Bird Flu Contingency Plans

While killing many chickens in order to help protect humanity against a flu pandemic has been met with both a nod in respect, and a cry in horror, it seems some places are going ahead to test out the culling process.

Ireland is now better prepared to deal with an outbreak of bird flu following the testing of a contingency plan on a farm in Co Limerick today.

Fifteen tonnes of liquid carbon dioxide in the form of dry ice was injected into a shed containing 12,000 hens on a farm in Kilmeady this afternoon.

They say that they died in a humane way, and showed little sign of distress. Will other countries follow suit to test their own culling proceedures to make sure they can slow down or stop any further outbreaks of the bird flu? Probably. Do I agree with what they are doing? Definetly. I would rather them kill a million chickens than let one of my family members die. Wouldn't you?
