Laos: First Bird Flu Case Since 2004

duck.jpgMany people are noticing that bird flu news is more prevalent than ever in our society, and that is because places where it has not appreared in a few years are starting to see a resurgency of bird flu cases.

A duck in Laos recently tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu strain, but the U.N. and the Food and Agriculture Organization say there is no sign that the virus is spreading. This is the first since 2004 that the Southeast Asian nation reported an occurance of the disease.

"We are doing surveillance and so far everything is negative," Ricarda Mondry, the FAO's chief technical adviser on avian influenza in Laos, told Reuters.

The duck was discovered in February by researchers on a surveillance project in the area. The case was reported recently to the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Ducks can be carriers of the disease without showing symptoms.
