Larry Brilliant's Talk on Pandemic Bird Flu

So how do you live up to a name like Dr. Brilliant? That's not an easy accomplishment, and yet, in technology and health circles around the world, Dr. Larry Brilliant is considered to be nothing short of a global leader and visionary.

Here is a quick backgrounder on Larry Brilliant:

- Working as a diplomat at the United Nations he spearheaded the WHO's successful effort to implement the smallpox eradication program.

- He founded the 'The Well' which is one of the Internet's oldest virtual communities with over 4000 non-anonymous members. Noted authors, programmers, journalists, activists and other creative people use The Well to engage in conversation ranging from very serious topics to very funny topics.

- He founded the Seva foundation which to this day continues to work in countries around the world restoring eyesight to those without ample access to medical technology and supplies. Through Seva's efforts more than 2 million blind people have had their eyesight restored via surgery, self sufficient eye care systems, and low cost manufacturing of intraocular lenses.

- He recently won the $100,000 TED Prize.

- He was recently named the Executive Director of Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google.

There are few people on Earth who can speak as intelligently about a looming bird flu pandemic as Larry Brilliant.
