Russia: First Peroral H5N1 Vaccine by Yearend

By the end of the year, Russia may have its first peroral, throught he mouth, vaccine for birds against the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

The director of the St. Petersburg Veterinary Institute of Poultry Breeding, Eduard Dzhavadov has said that the vaccine being developed by his organization and the Influenza Research Institute is to be administered with food and water rather than intravenously which will take much less time to administer. This means a whole large poultry farm could be immunized within half an hour, rather than many hours or even days.

"The Influenza Institute is working directly with the H5N1 virus. In July, we expect them to provide us with a strain on whose basis our institute will be developing the vaccine," Dzhavadov said.
