Toronto Aims To Be Leader In Public Health Education

toronto_u.jpgMany will remember the ordeal that the city of Toronto went through when dealing with SARS. By most scientists accounts SARS was the pandemic that 'almost' was. Had the city not acted as swiftly as it did to contain the virus, SARS could have spread around the globe.

The threat of epidemic diseases is an ongoing concern and now Toronto will be positioning itself to be a leader in this field. It was just announced that the University of Toronto will be opening a graduate school that is specifically targeted at public health issues.

"My goal is within five years (that) we're a destination university for public health... among the top schools in the world," the new director told media, quoted by the Toronto Star.

Mandel emphasized the school will not be limited to infectious diseases like SARS and the avian flu, but will include major ailments that are spreading at an epidemic speed such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases and stroke.
