U.S.-Canada Border Could Be Shut Down

border_crossing.jpgWhen the U.S. released their draft pandemic plan a few days ago, it was initially reported that complete border closure was off the table. However, a more thorough examination of the plan has revealed that a complete shut down of the U.S.-Canada land border is an option the U.S. government would consider in the face of a spreading flu pandemic.

What makes this a little puzzling is that closing the border would do little to stop the spread of an avian flu pandemic, yet the economic consequences would be severe for both sides of the equation.

But, while stressing the need to work with Canada and Mexico on a continental plan to contain the virus including a preference for limited travel restrictions the report also said "planning should consider a range of alternatives, from approaches that permit the cross-border flow of critical goods to complete border closure."
